I have wanted to stay consistent on this blog but I suppose I write when my heart desires to do so. Today is one of those days.
The title of this post falls in line with a show I watch called Bridgerton. Although at times it is aimed for the more mature audience, it is a melodrama that takes place turn of the century London with beautiful dresses, dapper young men and lots of drama to keep you on your toes as well as character development and relationship struggles that every one of us can relate to. This season I found the character I could understand.
This season, the female lead is Penelope Featherington. Not your "normal" looking lead with her voluptuous hips, larger than average hourglass figure and rolls in places most "normal" gals have them. She would be considered plus size in todays society. She has definitely found her love interest and it has now been at the forefront of everyone's Bridgerton discussion.
People have, for the most part, rallied around the actress that plays Penny Featherton and supported her greatly in this season, happy that she has found a lead role in this character and offered a point of view that is refreshing. The caveat to that though is often she is questioned about her weight, her "size" and her body. These questions also get asked to women who are by definition "skinnier" and "more in shape" but this too is so vulgar and absurd that one can only shake their head at the indecency of "social media" or interviewers who think they have a right to question anyone's body, in any manner.
Recently, Miss Alabama was crowned and to a lot of people were shocked. Miss Alabama is overweight, technically considered obese. She has a contagious smile and sounds like an amazing personality. Now, promoting obesity as a healthy lifestyle of course is ridiculous but the fact that people feel they can call this woman names, say despicable things about who she is and what kind of person "should be" crowned; is plainly just wrong.
There were comments like "I guess it is a personality contest now." and " Did she eat the judges?". How cruel of a society have we become that we would make such childish insults to a grown woman who proved against all odds that the pageant IS IN FACT not just a "pretty face" but also a personality contest. These women were never suppose to be based on "just their looks". I myself participated one year in a Miss Pre-teen USA. Judges are to consider looks, confidence, talents and personality. That is why contestants have multiple different things they are judged on. This woman outshined them all, even while being "fat". You Go Miss Alabama!!!!!
Growing up and still struggling with being overweight helps me to realize that I do not know everybody's story just like they do not know mine. I am overweight for many reasons including injury and chronic pain. Have you ever tried to work out when you feel like you have the flu every day? That is part of my issue. Or have you ever tried to work out when your foot is "painfully asleep" because you sat on it? My foot is like that every day. Not including the hormone imbalance that I have that makes it almost impossible to lose weight. Everything in terms of my weight is a challenge.
Much like Penelope Featherington or Miss Alabama, I do not want to be judged for my outward appearance. I don't want to have to be a wallflower because I am afraid if people would look at me, what they would say. This is unfair and unkind and the world does not need more unkindness, it is hard enough. This is a struggle "every fat" person has dealt with in their life. Making fun of someone for their weight is not a "joke", it is CRUEL!
I guess the reason I desired to write this blog today is that I want to make people aware that we should never judge a book by its cover. You have no idea what people are going through or the things they are struggling with.
So being more aware that maybe, just maybe they need some kind words of encouragement and positivity and not words that tear them down; would help people feel good about themselves, help them take care of themselves more and maybe help them be a better version of themselves (however that may look).
We all could use a little more kindness in this world lets start with things like not condemning someone for their success but rather lifting them up for what they have and can still do !!!!!!
Miss Alabama! You go girl! You are a bright shining star! I understand the struggles with weight and I hope if there is health reasons your doctor is helping you through them but know you are beautiful, you are worth and you are loved by many more than all those haters hiding behind a computer screen!
-Good Day
